Limestone Hearth and Slips

Limestone is a beautiful natural choice for fireplace hearths and slip sets, offering soft colouring, subtle variations and a timeless appearance that complements both traditional and contemporary surrounds. It is particularly well suited to electric fires and many closed-fronted gas fires, where the stone is generally exposed to lower and more controlled temperatures than with open fires or high-output solid-fuel appliances.
We have various limestones available to see at our showroom.

Description

Limestone is a beautiful natural choice for fireplace hearths and slip sets, offering soft colouring, subtle variations and a timeless appearance that complements both traditional and contemporary surrounds. It is particularly well suited to electric fires and many closed-fronted gas fires, where the stone is generally exposed to lower and more controlled temperatures than with open fires or high-output solid-fuel appliances.

Pros & Cons of Limestone

Advantages: Limestone provides a warm, natural appearance that works particularly well with stone fireplace surrounds. It can be cut to standard or bespoke dimensions, offers an elegant matt finish and creates a softer alternative to the darker appearance of granite or slate.

Things to consider: Limestone is softer and more porous than granite, so it can be more susceptible to staining, scratching and chipping. It can also be affected by intense or uneven heat, making the correct specification particularly important around working fireplaces.

For this reason, we generally recommend limestone hearths for electric fires and suitable closed-fronted gas fires. For open fires, wood-burning stoves or other solid-fuel appliances, granite or slate will often be the more practical choice, depending on the appliance and installation requirements.

Cleaning & Care

Regularly remove dust and debris with a soft brush or vacuum, then clean using warm water and a pH-neutral cleaner specifically designed for natural stone. Avoid acidic products, bleach, vinegar, limescale removers and abrasive cleaners, as these can mark or etch the limestone.

Because limestone is naturally porous, an appropriate stone sealer can help protect against staining and make routine maintenance easier. Spills should still be wiped away promptly, particularly liquids containing oils, acids or strong pigments.
