Description
Slate Hearths – Benefits & Care
Slate is an excellent material for fireplace hearths and slip sets, offering a naturally attractive appearance that works with both traditional fireplaces and contemporary stove installations. As a natural stone, every piece has subtle variations in colour, texture and markings, giving each installation its own character.
Pros & Cons of Slate
Advantages: Slate is durable, hard-wearing and heat resistant, making it well suited to fireplace applications. It is relatively easy to maintain, complements stone, marble and timber surrounds, and is available in honed, polished or riven finishes. Darker slate is also practical around fires because everyday soot and ash are generally less noticeable.
Things to consider: As a natural material, slate can contain variations, veins and small imperfections, which should be considered part of its character. It can scratch or chip if struck by heavy objects, and some finishes may show marks more readily than others. Hearth construction also needs to be appropriate for the appliance and installation, which is why one-piece, two-piece, flat and boxed-and-lipped options are available.
